Los barrios vecinos son al oeste Roggendorf/Thenhoven, al sur Blumenberg, Fühlingen y Merkenich. Al norte de Worringen se encuentra la ciudad de Dormagen en el distrito de Rhein-Kreis Neuss, y al este – al otro lado del Rin – se encuentra Monheim am Rhein.
El área del barrio ha estado habitada aproximadamente desde el año 500 antes de Cristo. Los primeros colonos fueron los eburones, que fueron reemplazados alrededor del 20 a.C. por los ubios. Luego siguieron los romanos alrededor del año 50 d.C. y aproximadamente en el 355 los francos. La existencia de villas romanas está arqueológicamente comprobada, aunque un castillo llamado Buruncum sigue siendo objeto de debate. La escritura de Worringen ha cambiado con frecuencia a lo largo de los siglos, también se encuentran: Worunc, Worunch, Woronc, Woring, Woeringen y Wuring.
