Freiburg fue fundada en el siglo XII como una comuna de mercado libre, de ahí su nombre. Esta ciudad estaba estratégicamente situada en una intersección de las rutas comerciales entre el mar Mediterráneo y el mar del Norte, así como entre el Rin y el Danubio. Las minas de plata en el cercano Schauinsland eran una importante fuente de capital para Freiburg. Esta plata convirtió a Freiburg en una de las ciudades más ricas de Europa y en 1327 Freiburg acuñó su propia moneda, el Rappenpfennig. A finales del siglo XIV, los filones de plata se agotaron y en 1460 solo vivían alrededor de 6.000 personas dentro de las murallas de la ciudad de Freiburg. La ciudad universitaria de Freiburg ha pasado de estar orientada a la minería a convertirse en un centro cultural de las artes y las ciencias.
