Fue en Mittenwald donde el oro del Reichsbank de los nazis fue transferido al Oberst Pfeiffer de los Gebirgsjäger (regimiento Edelweiss). El oro estaba en camino de Berlín a Garmisch-Partenkirchen, pero los aliados se estaban acercando demasiado a Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Así que lo llevaron a Mittenwald.
