Se encuentra en las dos líneas de tren Münster–Enschede y Dortmund–Enschede. Junto a esta estación, había en el área de la actual ciudad de Gronau un total de seis estaciones más, de las cuales hoy en día aún opera la ubicada en el distrito de Epe.
La antigua estación se inauguró en septiembre de 1875 como una estación conjunta de la Dortmund-Gronau-Enscheder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft y la Münster-Enscheder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft. Sin embargo, esta última se endeudó con el proyecto de construcción del ferrocarril, que luego fue continuado por la Königlich-Westfälische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft. Las dos líneas provenientes de Münster y Dortmund se unen aquí para la continuación conjunta hacia la ciudad neerlandesa de Enschede.
