Den ligger ved de to jernbanelinjer Münster–Enschede og Dortmund–Enschede. Udover denne station har der i området af den nuværende by Gronau været i alt seks andre stationer, hvoraf den i bydelen Epe stadig er i drift.
Den daværende station blev åbnet i september 1875 som en fælles station for Dortmund-Gronau-Enscheder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft og Münster-Enscheder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft. Sidstnævnte kom dog økonomisk i klemme med jernbanebyggeriet, hvorefter det blev videreført af den Kongelig-Westfalske Jernbane-Kompagni. De to linjer fra Münster og Dortmund sluttes her sammen til en fælles forlængelse ind i det nederlandske Enschede.
