Breisach am Rhein es una vieja ciudad alemana con unos 16,000 habitantes. Está situada a orillas del río Rin, entre las ciudades de Friburgo y Colmar y a 60 km al norte de Basilea . Un puente sobre el río Rin enlaza con Neuf-Brisach en Alsacia.
En origen la colina donde se asienta Breisach era el asentamiento de un príncipe celta. Los romanos erigieron un castillo auxiliar en el monte Brisiacus . La ciudad fue fundada en el siglo XI por la Dinastía Hohenstaufen. En el siglo XIII se construyó la catedral de Breisach. Desde el siglo XVI la ciudad se convierte en un enclave estratégico del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico. Fue disputada durante la guerra de los Treinta Años debido a su importancia como parte del camino español, fue sitiada por las tropas protestantes, siendo liberada por el duque de Feria el 16 de octubre de 1633.
