El Barmer Bank-Verein Hinsberg, Fischer & Comp. KGaA, comúnmente conocido como Barmer Bank-Verein o Asociación Bancaria de Barmer, está ubicado en Barmen y fue fundado en 1867. Hasta la fusión con Commerzbank AG durante la crisis bancaria en 1932, fue uno de los más grandes bancos regionales alemanes.
El banco de cambio fundado en 1810 por Johann Abraham Kemna es el "primer eslabón indiscutible en la cadena ininterrumpida de bancos, cuyo último eslabón, después de haber cambiado de nombre cuatro veces, se convirtió en la Asociación Bancaria de Barmer."
