La piedra de afilar es una montaña en el flanco norte del bosque de Franconia y, con 792,7 m sobre el nivel del mar, es la más alta de la Turingia oriental. Se encuentra cerca de Brennersgrün, en el distrito de Saalfeld-Rudolstadt en Turingia. En ella se erige la torre de observación Altvaterturm.
La piedra de afilar se eleva en la transición del bosque de Franconia a la cordillera de pizarra de Turingia, en el parque natural de la cordillera de pizarra de Turingia/Saale superior, cerca de la frontera con el parque natural de Franconia al suroeste. Su cumbre se encuentra a 3,3 km al sur del núcleo de la ciudad de Lehesten. Las localidades de Lehesten, Brennersgrün y Röttersdorf se encuentran al sureste y al noreste de ella.
