El Castillo de Münster no puede faltar en una visita a Münster. El edificio es un gran punto de partida para pasear por las calles del centro de la ciudad. En las inmediaciones del castillo se encuentran numerosos lugares de interés, para cuya visita definitivamente debes reservar algo de tiempo.
De la residencia principesca a la universidad
El Castillo de Münster fue residencia principesca hasta 1803. El arquitecto Johann Conrad Schlaun construyó el edificio barroco para el penúltimo príncipe obispo de Münster, Maximiliano Federico de Königsegg-Rothenfels.
La estructura de tres alas, de 91 metros de largo y con un saliente central de cinco ejes, está elegantemente diseñada mediante el uso de ladrillo rojo y arenisca clara. En 1945, el castillo sufrió graves daños por bombardeos, y entre 1947 y 1953 se reconstruyó, al menos en su apariencia externa, según los planes antiguos.
