El castillo de Altena se encuentra en un espolón montañoso del Klusenberg en la ciudad de Altena, a orillas del Lenne, en el círculo de Märkisch en Renania del Norte-Westfalia.
Alrededor de 1108, se dice que los hermanos Adolf y Everhard von Berg recibieron un terreno en el Sauerland marca de manos del emperador Enrique V por sus leales servicios. En el monte Wulfseck construyeron un castillo, que inicialmente llamaron Wulfeshagen y más tarde Altena. Esta es una de al menos tres leyendas sobre la fundación del condado de Altena o sobre la creación del castillo. Se supone que el castillo fue construido para proteger y aprovechar la importante industria del hierro en la región.
