La tranvía de Rostock es, junto con la tranvía de Schwerin, la única que aún existe en Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. La red abarca una longitud de líneas de 35,6 kilómetros y 64 paradas. El primer tranvía de caballos circuló en 1881 en el centro de la ciudad, que sigue siendo el centro de la red. Hasta 2006, la red se amplió gradualmente, de modo que el servicio de autobuses solo tiene que cubrir la mitad de la demanda de transporte.
Desde 1992, también se han puesto en servicio tranvías articulados de piso bajo. Desde aproximadamente 2003, se puede acceder de manera accesible en todos los viajes.
