Die Straßenbahn Rostock ist neben der Straßenbahn in Schwerin die einzige noch bestehende in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Das Netz umfasst eine Streckenlänge von 35,6 Kilometer und 64 Haltestellen. Die erste Pferdebahn fuhr 1881 in der Innenstadt, die weiterhin das Zentrum des Netzes darstellt. Bis 2006 wurde das Netz nach und nach erweitert, sodass der Busverkehr nur noch die Hälfte des Verkehrsbedarfes abdecken muss.
Seit 1992 kommen auch Niederflur-Gelenkwagen zum Einsatz. Seit etwa 2003 kann man bei sämtlichen Fahrten barrierefrei einsteigen.
