La nueva Universitätsstraße se encuentra en el casco antiguo de Maguncia, entre Schillerstraße y Münsterstraße. Se creó a finales del siglo XVIII y se nombró en honor al entonces propietario, el fondo universitario. Las casas del 5 al 9 están protegidas como zona de monumentos.
El área donde se extiende la calle estaba en gran parte deshabitada en la Edad Media, hasta la expansión de Thiermarkt o Dietsmarcktstraße. Solo cuando el barrio de Bleichen fue drenado y liberado para la construcción en 1656 bajo el reinado del elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn, y se estableció una conexión entre Großer Bleiche y Thiermarkt, se volvió interesante para el desarrollo y la construcción del terreno. La abadía de Altmünster comenzó a construir casas de renta en fila a partir de 1699 en los antiguos terrenos de jardín adquiridos previamente, hasta 1719; estas se conocieron como casas de las monjas de Altmünster.
