Los Baños Romanos, al noreste del Palacio Charlottenhof en el Parque Sanssouci, Potsdam, reflejan el "anhelo de Italia" del promotor Federico Guillermo. Diversos estilos romanos/italianos antiguos fueron reunidos en el conjunto arquitectónico entre 1829 y 1840.
Aún en su época de príncipe heredero, Federico Guillermo mandó construir primero el Palacio Charlottenhof y luego los Baños Romanos. Con numerosas ideas y dibujos de diseño, el talentoso heredero al trono tuvo una gran influencia en los planes del arquitecto Karl Friedrich Schinkel. La dirección de la obra fue encargada al alumno de Schinkel, Ludwig Persius.
