El Jardín del Placer es el jardín más antiguo de Potsdam. Está limitado por la Calle Breiten al norte, el Havel al este, el terraplén ferroviario al sur y el Ministerio del Interior al oeste. Creado como jardín barroco bajo el Gran Elector Federico Guillermo para el Castillo de la Ciudad y transformado en parte en un área de ejercicios plana bajo el rey Federico Guillermo I, el resto fue embellecido por Federico II y rediseñado en 1829 por Peter Joseph Lenné. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, con la construcción del Estadio Ernst-Thälmann en el Jardín del Placer, comenzó la demolición del Castillo de la Ciudad. Durante la construcción del Interhotel Potsdam, el Jardín del Placer desapareció en 1969 hasta quedar irreconocible. Con motivo de la Exposición Federal de Jardinería 2001, se creó un nuevo Jardín del Placer tras la demolición del Estadio Thälmann.
La demolición del Hotel Mercure sigue siendo un objetivo de rehabilitación para el Jardín del Placer desde una decisión de 2016.
