El Museo de Hameln se encuentra en dos edificios en el histórico casco antiguo de Hameln, la Casa Leisthaus y la Casa de los Abades cercana. Los dos edificios en la Osterstraße son de las construcciones más significativas de la época del Renacimiento de Weser en Hameln.
El museo, inaugurado en 1912, muestra en su nueva exposición permanente abierta en 2011 la historia y la cultura de la ciudad de Hameln, así como de la región de Weserbergland. Un enfoque se centra en la famosa leyenda del cazador de ratas, que también se presenta en el "Teatro del Cazador de Ratas" del museo.
