El Castillo Richmond fue construido entre 1768 y 1769 para la princesa y posterior duquesa Augusta, esposa de Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, en el sur de la ciudad de Braunschweig. El maestro constructor fue Carl Christoph Fleischer.
El castillo recibió su nombre en recuerdo de la tierra natal inglesa de la princesa, Richmond Park en el Támesis. Sobre la pronunciación real en Braunschweig, Karl Steinacker informa aún en 1925: Desde el Castillo Richmond en el Támesis [...] este pequeño castillo de Braunschweig, que hasta ahora, de acuerdo con la costumbre de su época de origen, siempre ha sido pronunciado en francés, ha recibido su nombre.
