Il Castello di Richmond fu costruito dal 1768 al 1769 per la principessa e poi duchessa Augusta, moglie di Carlo Guglielmo Ferdinando, nella parte meridionale della città di Braunschweig. L'architetto fu Carl Christoph Fleischer.
Il castello prese il suo nome in memoria della patria inglese della principessa, Richmond Park sul Tamigi. Riguardo alla pronuncia effettiva a Braunschweig, Karl Steinacker riferisce ancora nel 1925: Dal Castello di Richmond sul Tamigi [...] questo piccolo castello braunschweighese, finora, secondo l'usanza del suo tempo di origine, è sempre stato pronunciato in francese e ha ricevuto il suo nome.
