En 1855 se fundó una sociedad minera, Hercules, en Altenessen, que comenzó con la construcción de un pozo. El pozo fue equipado con una gran torre Malakow con dos alas de máquinas y empezó a funcionar en 1861. La sociedad minera Hercules fue adquirida en el mismo año por la Asociación Minera de Colonia bajo Friedrich Grillo y renombrada como Zeche Carl.
