In 1855 werd de mijnbouwvereniging Hercules in Altenessen opgericht, die begon met het ontplooien van een schacht. De schacht werd uitgerust met een groot formaat Malakowtoren met twee machinehuisvleugels en ging in 1861 in gebruik. De vereniging Hercules werd in hetzelfde jaar overgenomen door de Rijnlandse mijnbouwvereniging onder Friedrich Grillo en hernoemd tot Zeche Carl.
