Nel 1855 si costituì una società mineraria Hercules ad Altenessen, che iniziò con lo scavo di un pozzo. Il pozzo fu dotato di una grande torre Malakow con due ali per le macchine ed entrò in funzione nel 1861. La società mineraria Hercules fu acquisita nello stesso anno dal Club minerario di Colonia sotto Friedrich Grillo e ribattezzata Zeche Carl.
