El Gymnasium Pelizaeus es el más grande de los seis gymnasios de la ciudad de Paderborn, con aproximadamente 1500 estudiantes. Lleva el nombre de su fundadora, Johanna Pelizaeus, quien en 1859, como joven maestra, estableció con el apoyo de círculos eclesiásticos en Paderborn una "escuela católica privada para niñas" con internado. Para las niñas mayores de 14 años, el Gymnasium Pelizaeus fue la primera institución educativa católica de educación secundaria en Paderborn. Poco antes, se había establecido una escuela secundaria evangélica para niñas.
