La catedral de San Esteban y San Sixto en Halberstadt es una de las pocas grandes construcciones de iglesias del esquema catedralicio francés en Alemania. Se encuentra en medio de un conjunto de edificios románicos, barrocos, neogóticos y modernos al borde del núcleo histórico de la ciudad, que está situada en la zona norte de las estribaciones de Harz y fue severamente destruida durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La catedral también fue gravemente dañada. Es propiedad de la Fundación Cultural de Sajonia-Anhalt.
La diócesis de Halberstadt fue establecida en el siglo IX como un centro de misión y administración en el recién conquistado territorio tribal sajón.
