El nombre se basa en la antigua designación del terreno Driland, que ya estaba registrada en mapas alrededor de 1865, y hace referencia al encuentro de Westfalia, el antiguo condado de Bentheim y la provincia neerlandesa de Overijssel.
El lago Driland es un lago artificial creado en la década de 1970 para mejorar la oferta de ocio de la región. En las proximidades se construyeron restaurantes, instalaciones de camping y casas de vacaciones. La notable división visual separa la zona de baño y natación del área de deportes acuáticos. La mayor parte del lago está abierta para surfistas, navegantes, remeros y pescadores deportivos. Alrededor del lago hay un sendero bien transitable de aproximadamente 3,3 km de longitud. La frontera entre Renania del Norte-Westfalia y Baja Sajonia se encuentra a pocos metros al norte del lago, mientras que la frontera entre Alemania y los Países Bajos está aproximadamente a 200 metros al oeste.
