Il nome si basa sulla storica designazione del territorio Driland, già registrata su mappe intorno al 1865, e si riferisce all'incontro della Vestfalia, dell'antico contado di Bentheim e della provincia olandese di Overijssel.
Il lago Driland è un lago artificiale creato negli anni '70 per migliorare l'offerta ricreativa della regione. Nella diretta vicinanza sono stati realizzati ristoranti, campeggi e case vacanze. La divisione, anche visivamente evidente, separa l'area balneare e natatoria dall'area per gli sport acquatici. La parte più grande del lago è aperta a surfers, velisti, canoisti e pescatori sportivi. Attorno al lago si snoda un percorso facilmente praticabile di circa 3,3 km di lunghezza. Il confine tra la Renania settentrionale-Vestfalia e la Bassa Sassonia si trova a pochi metri a nord del lago, mentre il confine tra Germania e Paesi Bassi è a circa 200 metri a ovest.
