The name is based on the centuries-old field name Driland, which was already noted on maps around 1865, and refers to the meeting point of Westphalia, the former County of Bentheim, and the Dutch province of Overijssel.
Lake Driland is an artificially created lake from the 1970s aimed at enhancing the recreational offerings of the region. In close proximity, restaurants, camping sites, and holiday homes were built. The visually striking division separates the swimming area from the water sports area. The larger part of the lake is open to surfers, sailors, rowers, and sport fishermen. There is a well-maintained path around the lake that is approximately 3.3 km long. The border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony runs just a few meters north of the lake, while the border between Germany and the Netherlands is about 200 meters to the west.
