El barrio de Bochum-Centro se encuentra en el centro de Bochum y en el distrito de Bochum-Mitte. La ciudad también lo llama Bochum-City.
En la Edad Media, Bochum era un pintoresco pueblo, especialmente con casas de entramado de madera. La ciudad tenía derechos urbanos, pero nunca tuvo murallas. El médico y escritor bochumense Kortum elaboró en 1790 un mapa que aún se conserva. Las últimas calles con casas de entramado de madera estaban en el barrio de los curtidores, cerca de la iglesia de la parroquia. Esta área marca la parte más antigua de la ciudad, que se supone que se remonta a una corte real de Carlomagno. Muchas otras calles del centro de la ciudad son rectas y son carreteras en la tradición prusiana.
