De stadswijk Bochum-Innenstadt ligt in het centrum van Bochum en in het stadsdistrict Bochum-Mitte. De stad wordt ook wel Bochum-City genoemd.
In de middeleeuwen was Bochum een beschaafde stad, vooral met vakwerkhuizen. De stad had stadsrechten, maar nooit een stadsmuur. De Bochumse arts en schrijver Kortum maakte in 1790 een kaart die nog bewaard is gebleven. De laatste straatjes met vakwerkhuizen bevonden zich in de Gerberwijk nabij de Propsteikirche. Dit gebied markeert het oudste deel van de stad, dat terug zou gaan op een koninklijk hof van Karel de Grote. Veel andere straten in het stadscentrum lopen recht en zijn wegen in Pruisische traditie.
