El Arzobispado de Colonia fue uno de los más importantes principados eclesiásticos del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico. Colonia es la antigua ciudad romana de Colonia Agrippina, que llegaría a ser una ciudad libre en 1288 y la residencia del Arzobispo sería trasladada desde la Catedral de Colonia hasta Bonn. De esta manera, aunque la ciudad pertenecía a la diócesis, no formaba parte del territorio del Electorado.
Sus territorios incluían una franja de territorios a lo largo de la ribera izquierda del Rin, este de Jülich, así como el Ducado de Westfalia en la otra orilla del río, además de Berg y Mark. El Arzobispo era tradicionalmente uno de los Electores Imperiales y el Archicanciller de Italia y Borgoña, técnicamente desde 1238 y permanentemente desde 1263 hasta 1803.
