Hace aproximadamente cuatro mil años antes de nuestra era, los primeros agricultores sedentarios en nuestra zona se erigieron un monumento. Ha perdurado hasta hoy: la tumba de piedra gigante Teufelsteine (“Düwelsteene”).
Se encuentra a 3,5 kilómetros al este del núcleo urbano de Heiden, en un paisaje de dunas cubiertas de pinos. Cómo llegaron estas dunas a Westfalia es una historia aparte: estas colinas de arena son de origen glacial. El viento las arrastró durante la era glacial de Weichsel (hace unos cincuenta mil años), cuando el norte de Alemania ya no estaba cubierto de hielo, pero debido al frío reinante no tenía una capa de vegetación que pudiera retener el ligero suelo arenoso.
