Hengersberg fue fundada en el año 997 como Helmgeresberg por Gotardo de Hildesheim, a orillas del Danubio. El monumento más antiguo es la iglesia de Frauenberg. En 1009 el káiser Heinrich II le dio el estatus de Markt.
