Burgwenden está incrustada entre las cadenas montañosas de Monraburg, Wendenburg y Finnberg en la salida sur de un paso a través de Schmücke y Hohe Schrecke. A través del lugar fluye el Hirschbach.
La colonización del paisaje alrededor de Burgwenden está documentada por numerosos hallazgos de suelo desde el Neolítico, las concentraciones de hallazgos sugieren asentamientos de los ceramistas de banda.
En un lugar estratégicamente importante se construyó la Monraburg, una de las mayores fortificaciones prehistóricas en el borde norte de la cuenca de Turingia. Al noroeste, fue complementada en la alta Edad Media por la Wendenburg. Ambas fortificaciones aseguraban el entorno densamente poblado y, al mismo tiempo, una carretera antigua que pasaba por el paso de Finne.
