Burgwenden est niché entre les chaînes de montagnes de Monraburg, Wendenburg et Finnberg à la sortie sud d'un col à travers la Schmücke et Hohe Schrecke. Le Hirschbach traverse le village.
La colonisation du paysage autour de Burgwenden est attestée par de nombreuses découvertes archéologiques datant du Néolithique, les concentrations de trouvailles indiquent des établissements des céramiques cordées.
À un emplacement stratégiquement important, la Monraburg, l'un des plus grands forts préhistoriques au bord nord du bassin thuringeois, a été érigée. Au nord-ouest, elle a été complétée au début du Moyen Âge par la Wendenburg. Ces deux fortifications garantissaient la sécurité de l'environnement densément peuplé et en même temps d'une ancienne route qui traversait le col de Finne.
