Burgwenden è situata tra le catene montuose di Monraburg, Wendenburg e Finnberg all'uscita sud di un valico attraverso la Schmücke e Hohe Schrecke. Nel paese scorre il fiume Hirschbach.
La colonizzazione del paesaggio attorno a Burgwenden è attestata da numerosi reperti risalenti al Neolitico, le concentrazioni di ritrovamenti indicano insediamenti dei ceramisti a bande.
In una posizione strategicamente significativa fu costruita la Monraburg, uno dei più grandi forti preistorici sulla sponda settentrionale del bacino di Turingia. A nord-ovest, nel periodo medievale, fu aggiunta la Wendenburg. Entrate strutture difensive garantivano la sicurezza della densamente popolata zona circostante e un'antica strada che attraversava il valico di Finne.
