El edificio protegido como patrimonio se encuentra en el distrito de Rheda, frente a la iglesia parroquial católica de San Clemente. Desde 1872, es propiedad de la casa principesca de Bentheim-Tecklenburg.
En 1829/1830, el consejero del príncipe Clemens August Rötteken hizo construir el palacio que lleva su nombre. Rötteken fue un influyente jurista administrativo durante la época prusiana, que contribuyó en Berlín para que el ferrocarril de Colonia-Minden pasara por Rheda. Así, se establecieron en seguida importantes empresas de la industria cárnica y del mueble, que trajeron un auge económico a la antigua residencia señorial, que siempre había tenido un carácter rural.
