La zona de bosque caducifolio, caracterizada por su cercanía a la naturaleza y su humedad, es la fuente del arroyo Breitenbrucher, así como de numerosas otras fuentes, y está rodeada o atravesada por superficies de pradera, en su mayoría ricas en estructura y utilizadas de manera extensiva (reliquias del paisaje cultural). Su tamaño es de 58,12 ha. El área protegida se encuentra en el borde norte de la zona de Emscher, en el extremo este del territorio urbano de Recklinghausen, justo en la frontera con Castrop-Rauxel, en un espacio intensamente influenciado por la agricultura entre Suderwich, Becklem y Horneburg. También incluye parcelas que no estaban contenidas en la orden original del gobierno distrital de Münster (1994, aproximadamente 47 ha). Esto incluye las áreas húmedas del sur, así como el área de un antiguo vertedero, que hoy en día está forestado, en el oeste del área protegida.
