La historia de la colección de pinturas
La Colección de Pinturas Nivaagaard era originalmente privada y fue creada por el terrateniente y político Johannes Hage (1842-1923) en el período de aproximadamente 1895 a 1905.
Johannes Hage coleccionó arte europeo desde el renacimiento y el barroco, y arte danés de la edad de oro. Con una fundación del 30 de septiembre de 1908, Johannes Hage convirtió su colección privada de arte en una institución autónoma con acceso para el público.
Incluso antes de eso, en 1903, había hecho construir por el arquitecto Johan Schrøder un pequeño templo del arte para la colección cerca del edificio principal de Nivaagaard.
Hasta su muerte en 1923, Johannes Hage fue presidente de la junta que gestionó el museo hasta 1981, cuando se contrató al primer director profesional.
