Catedral más antigua de América consagrada a Santa María de la Encarnación. La más antigua de las diócesis sobrevivientes de América, la Diócesis de Santo Domingo fue creada el 8 de agosto de 1511 mediante la Bula “Romanus Pontifex” del 8 de Agosto de 1511 del Papa Julio II.
La Arquidiócesis de Santo Domingo es considerada la primera sede episcopal de América. Entre todas las diócesis del norte y sur del continente americano, solamente al Arzobispo de Santo Domingo corresponde el título de Primado de América (o Primado de Indias) de acuerdo con la Bula de Pío VII Divinis praeceptis del 28 de noviembre de 1816, y ratificado por el Corcordato entre la Santa Sede y República Dominicana del 16 de junio de 1954. El templo que la encabeza es la Basílica Catedral Metropolitana Santa María de La Encarnación, la cual posee el título, los derechos y privilegios de Basílica Menor, que le otorgó Benedicto XV en su Breve Inter Americae del 14 de junio de 1920.
