Villanueva del Rosario es un municipio situado en el noreste de la provincia, dentro de la comarca de Nororma y del partido judicial de Archidona. Tiene una superficie de 44'6 km² y una población de 3.641 habitantes , según el censo del INE de 2012.Su relieve es agreste y montañoso salvo la ribera del río Guadalhorce. Tiene una altura media de 600m sobre el nivel del mar. Su punto más elevado es "El Chamizo" con una altura de 1637m. La vista desde la cumbre da una idea de la orografía de la comarca.
