Azcoitia[2][3][4] [5] es un municipio de la provincia de Guipúzcoa, País Vasco, España. Según datos del EUSTAT, tiene una población de 11 879 habitantes .[6]Esta población fue fundada en 1324 por el rey Alfonso XI de Castilla bajo el nombre de San Martín de Iraurgui. El nombre San Martín se debía a que la villa se fundaba junto a una ermita de dicha advocación y el aditamento de Iraurgui hace referencia al río y valle en el que se ubica la población, compartido con la vecina Azpeitia. Unos años más tarde, en 1331, se produce una refundación de la villa en otro emplazamiento cercano conocido como Miranda, pasándose a llamar la villa Miranda de Iraurgui. Sin embargo, este nombre fue arrinconado en no más de un siglo por el de Azcoitia, que desde 1457 es el que aparece en las actas de las Juntas Generales de Guipúzcoa como nombre propio de la villa.
