La catedral de Santa María de Tudela es un templo tardorrománico, inspirada en la arquitectura cisterciense, de grandes dimensiones,[1] que se comenzó a construir a finales del siglo XII durante el reinado de Sancho VI el Sabio, pasando el testigo a su hijo Sancho VII el Fuerte, que a su vez lo pasó a su sobrino Teobaldo I. Utilizó algunos de los cimientos de la Mezquita Mayor de Tudela . Como las orientaciones de los dos templos no coincidían, la mezquita fue demolida para edificar el nuevo templo y solo se aprovecharon algunos de sus cimientos.
