El Plan Cerdá fue un plan de reforma y ensanche de la ciudad de Barcelona de 1860 que seguía criterios del plan hipodámico, con una estructura en cuadrícula, abierta e igualitaria. Fue creado por el ingeniero Ildefonso Cerdá y su aprobación fue seguida de una fuerte polémica por haber sido impuesto desde el gobierno del Reino de España en contra del plan de Antonio Rovira y Trías que había ganado un concurso del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona.
El ensanche contemplado en el plan se desplegaba sobre una inmensa superficie que estaba libre de construcciones al ser considerada zona militar estratégica. Proponía una cuadrícula continua de manzanas de 113,3 metros desde el Besós hasta Montjuic, con calles de 20, 30 y 60 metros con una altura máxima de construcción de 16 metros. La novedad en la aplicación del plan hipodámico consistía en que las manzanas tenían chaflanes de 45º para permitir una mejor visibilidad.[1]
