La antigua Iglesia de San Julián de Ferrol, mediante bula de Juan XXIII alcanzó la categoría de concatedral el 9 de marzo de 1959. No alcanzó la de catedral porque en su misma diócesis ya había otra catedral, la de Mondoñedo .
Una de sus características principales es que no presenta planta de cruz latina sino una planta de cruz griega.
