La Iglesia arciprestal de Santa María de Alcoy , se empezó a construir siglo XVIII en la parte alta de la ciudad, frente al Convento de San Agustín del siglo XIII. En 1936, con el estallido de la Guerra Civil, el «Comité Revolucionario» acordó la demolición del templo, realizada en 1937, perdiéndose casi todo el patrimonio pictórico de sus muros. La reconstrucción se inicia en 1940 y en 1955 se bendice la nueva iglesia, sobre el solar donde se levantaba el antiguo templo imitando su fisonomía original y usando los restos de planta de la anterior.
