Real Instituto Jovellanos es la denominación de uno de los más antiguos centros educativos de España. Fue creado en Gijón por Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos como uno de los proyectos ilustrados que realizó en el Principado de Asturias. La idea de crear un centro educativo que formase en minería y marina surgió en medio de los proyectos vinculados a la explotación de las minas que comenzaban a abrirse en los yacimientos de carbón de la cuenca minera asturiana, junto a la construcción de una carretera que la uniera con el puerto de Gijón .
