Talavera la Vieja, también llamada Talaverilla por sus antiguos habitantes y sus descendientes, estaba situada en España, en la Alta Extremadura, provincia de Cáceres, 39º 48' 18" N y 5º 24' 25" O, junto a la margen izquierda del río Tajo, en la comarca del Campo Arañuelo.
Según E. Bascuas, este topónimo sería derivado de la base paleoeuropea *tal-, derivada de la raíz hidronímica indoeuropea *tā- "derretirse, fluir".[1]
