En la fértil vega , al pie del acantilado calizo con Arcos de la Frontera encima, el río Guadalete lo envuelve como una cinta. Aquí el río Guadelete está cerrado por la presa de Arcos, construida en 1966. Esto crea un embalse con una capacidad de 14 hm3.
El embalse se utiliza para riego, pesca y deportes náuticos. En 2014 se creó una playa artificial apta para el baño cerca de la urbanización Mesón de la Molinera.
Situado casi en su totalidad en la provincia española de Cádiz, el río Guadalete nace en el Parque Natural Sierra de Grazalema a unos 1.000 metros de altitud , y desemboca durante 172 kilómetros en la Bahía de Cádiz al norte de la ciudad. El nombre del río proviene de la expresión árabe وادي لكة (Wadi lakath) que significa "Río del Olvido" .
