El antiguo ayuntamiento de Jerez fue construido en 1575 durante el reinado de Felipe II .
Tiene tres fachadas, de las cuales la fachada principal da a la Plaza de la Asunción . Consta también de un edificio principal y otro anexo en forma de logia porticada con tres arcos italianos de medio punto. Ambos edificios están decorados con motivos renacentistas .
Está considerado como uno de los mejores ejemplos de la arquitectura renacentista en Andalucía.
Desde 1873 hasta época reciente, el edificio albergó la biblioteca municipal , cuyo patrimonio bibliográfico ha sido catalogado en más de 40.000 volúmenes; y también el Museo Arqueológico , que alberga, entre otras cosas, el famoso casco de Guadalete del siglo VII aC y se han expuesto ídolos femeninos de la Edad del Bronce.
Actualmente alberga las instalaciones del Ayuntamiento de Jerez .
