El Raval barcelonès ha sido, desde casi el inicio de la historia de esta ciudad, un espacio destinado a acoger instituciones caridadtivas y sanitarias. Esto ha ido dando carácter al barrio hasta bien entrado el siglo XX, cuando las nuevas corrientes higienistas postularon la convenencia de trasladar los servicios sanitarios y caritativos a las zonas exteriores de la ciudad. Se visitarían espacios como el Hospital de Sant Pau, el Hospital de Sant Llàtzer o de Els Masells o el Procedimentalrio anti-tuberculós diseñado por Josep Maria Sert.
