La municipalidad es unilingüista finés. Curiosamente, 'Varkaus' se traduce como ladrón, aun cuando no es la razón del nombre de la ciudad. En antiguo finlandés, la misma palabra significa estrecho, y esta ciudad se ubica en el distrito del lago.
